Feeding or bedding using even slightly mouldy straw, hay or any other feed or forage can be harmful to both the animals and the humans that encounter it. The potential disease impact and reduced animal performance means this should be avoided at all costs.
Moulds produce mycotoxins, affecting the animal's metabolism, causing reduced milk yields in cows, abortions and, in extreme cases, death.
To avoid any mycotoxin trace in milk, lactating dairy cows should never be fed mouldy feeds.
The results are reported as Cfu/g (colony forming units per g), a unit used in microbiology to estimate the number of viable bacteria or fungal cells in a sample.
